Indo-American boy Arvind Mahankali won the 86th Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night after beting 11 fellow finalists.
The 13-year-old Arvind correctly spelled German word “knaidel” to win the championship.
Incidentally, in his previous two attempts he finished in third place in 2011 and 2012 and both times he was eliminated on German-originated words.
“The German curse has turned into a German blessing,” the boy from Bayside Hills, N.Y said.
Arvind won $30,000 in cash and huge cup-shaped trophy.
Arvind becomes the sixth consecutive Indian-American and the 11th in the past 15 years to win the National Spelling Bee championship.
Arvind’s family is originally from Hyderabad.
