Maharashtra’s Advocate General, Sreehari Aney submitted his resignation on Tuesday, after his comments on Marathwada triggered an uproar in the state legislative assembly and demand for his resignation was made subsequently.
Aney, on Monday, kicked a controversy after raising the demand of ‘separate Marathwada’ on the lines of separate statehood for Vidarbha, at a programe in Jalna district. Reportedly, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was unhappy over the comments made by the Advocate General and intervened in the matter. A meeting of all party leaders was held later.
The Shiv Sena staged a protest against Aney with its leader Ramdas Kadam claiming that Mr Fadnavis had assured him that a decision on Aney will be taken by Tuesday morning. Sena had also said that it would not let the legislature function till Aney was sacked of indulging in ‘treason’.
“The statement made by me was in connection with a function that was held where my book, which is about the history of Vidarbha, was released. One of the things that the book deals with is the constant criticism that there is no movement for freedom of Vidarbha. It also says that it is a political issue politicized by politicians whenever they are out of power. It is used as a means of convenience more than anything else,” Aney told ANI. He said he was not scared with any politician and did not see any reason to get security. But, he added further, that if they wanted to protect him then they were welcome.
