A massive drama unfolded at the Hyderabad Central University early on Wednesday, ahead of JNU student union leader Kanhaiya Kumar’s visit, resulting in authorities prohibiting entry to not only Kanhaiya Kumar but also outsiders, including politicians and journalists. The classes too were declared suspended for four days.
Tensions escalated following the Vice Chancellor Appa Rao Podile resuming his duties. Enraged students ransacked his lodge and stones were pelted on police personnel who were deployed right there. The Registrar, In-charge of the University, wrote to the Commissioner of Police requesting him to deploy more force in the wake of the incident.
25 students and 2 faculty members of the University were arrested later for ransacking the VC’s lounge and targetting the police personnel.
Kanhaiya Kumar, who reached Hyderabad in the morning was denied entry inside the University campus. Kumar, however, addressed the students gathered at the gate. He was quoted by The Times of India as saying, “”You can’t suppress our voice by using sticks against us,” while adding, “I will continue my fight to ensure justice for Rohith Vemula.” Kumar expressed his solidarity with the students and asserted that this government was not listening to the students’ voice.
