The International Criminal Court on Wednesday stated that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) ‘remains out of its jurisdiction.’ In its official statement released to the media, Ms. Fatou Bensouda, Chief Prosecutor said that her executive office had received tonnes of such reports describing heinous ‘crimes of unspeakable cruelty’ by the militants of the ISIS and that the court retained no rights of interference over the two nations of Syria and Iraq.
In a written statement, the Chief Prosecutor further said that a change in the matters of jurisdiction would have to arrive from the decisions derived at from outside the court. The executive office had looked into several avenues and zones and had spent countless hours of investigation into the crimes of the ISIS.
The nations of France and Switzerland, on the other hand, have issued statements in the recent days stating that they shall make efforts and highlight the atrocities of the militants to the International Court, this time with greater focus in the Security Council.
‘It is essential that the Security Council refer to the matter to the International Criminal Court,’ said the Foreign Minister of France, Laurent Fabius to a Council meet, the previous month.
