The United States along with European Union has rejected Crimean referendum.
US President Barack Obama has told Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telephonic conversation that US will not give recognition to the Crimean referendum which has violated Ukrainian constitution by voting to secede from Ukraine.
“He (Obama) emphasised that Russia’s actions were in violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and that, in coordination with our European partners, we are prepared to impose additional costs on Russia for its actions,” the White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters.
The US President has emphasized the need of diplomatic resolution to solve the Ukraine crisis and asked Russia to withdraw its military exercised into the Ukrainian territory to reduce the tension in that region.
Obama told Putin that US Secretary of State, John Kerry would continue working with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov and the Ukrainian side to solve the crisis.
Meanwhile Crimea has overwhelmingly Supported Split from Ukraine to join Russia. According to the news agencies over 95% voters said they were in favor of joining Russia.
Carney has, however, rejected the Crimean “referendum” and said Ukrainian government is ready to discuss demand of increasing autonomy for Crimea.
“No decisions should be made about the future of Ukraine without the Ukrainian government. Moreover, this vote was not necessary,” Carney said.
“The Ukrainian government has made clear its willingness to discuss increased autonomy for Crimea, and the presidential elections planned for May 25 provide a legitimate opportunity for all Ukrainians to make their voices heard on the future of their country,” Carney added.
