The United States of America along with the Western nations have refused to accept poll results from East Ukraine by calling it ‘illegal referendum’.
Blaming Moscow for destabilizing the sovereignty of Ukraine, the European Union said they would not recognize the results which gave referendum to join Russia.
“The so-called referenda in … parts of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions were illegal and we do not recognize the outcome,” E.U. foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said.
“Those who organized the referendum have no democratic legitimacy,” the EU said.
The U.S. rejected the referendum, saying it was “an attempt to create further division and disorder.”
“As the United States has said, the referendums being planned for May 11 in portions of eastern Ukraine by armed separatist groups are illegal under Ukrainian law and are an attempt to create further division and disorder,” newspapers quoted State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki.
“If these referendums go forward, they will violate international law and the territorial integrity of Ukraine,” Psaki said adding, “The United States will not recognize the results of these illegal referendums.”
The Pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of Ukraine, however, claimed that 90 percent voters who voted on Sunday voted in favour of the referendum. The rebel leaders said they would analyze the results to get clear picture whether the voters want to break away from Ukraine or joining Russia.
Meanwhile Russia said that they would “respect” the choice of voters in two regions of eastern Ukraine.
In a statement, the Kremlin said, “Moscow respects the will of the people in Donetsk and Lugansk and hopes that the practical realization of the outcome of the referendums will be carried out in a civilized manner, without resorting to violence, through dialogue between representatives of Kiev, Donetsk and Lugansk.”
Rebel leader of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin, told media that it had appeal to Moscow to make the region a part of the Russian Federation.
“The people of Donetsk have always been part of the Russian world,” Pushilin said. “For us, the history of Russia is our history,” Pushilin said.
