Rescue efforts in the country of Nepal are intensifying after around 3,500 lives had been lost on Saturday, owing to a disastrous earthquake that had happened in the last 80 years.
Several nations have come together to offer aid and other assistance to the calamity-struck nation. Many countries and charities have offered monetary aid.
Seventeen lives had been lost alone in the Mount Everest region due to avalanches. A similar strong aftershock was felt on Sunday in the Nepal, along with the surrounding regions in India and Bangladesh, with more and continuous avalanches being reported near Everest. The 6.7 magnitude tremor, centred 60km (40 miles) to the east of the nation’s capital city, Kathmandu, leaving the masses frightened. Sharp shrill and screams of an avalanches were reported to be heard.
Seismologists and other experts anticipate to see at least one aftershock that measures roughly some magnitude lesser than the main quake. One of these, with a Magnitude of 6.6, was seen just within half an hour after Saturday’s major quake. Sunday has now experienced a giant aftershock of 6.7.
Although each step down on the magnitude scale is a 30-times drop in the energy released, Sunday’s aftershock had been expected to be a little less severe. However, in its course, casualties have occurred.
As of now, a huge downpour has hit the nation, rendering fresh chaos amidst. The Kathmandu city airport has been shut and travellers and locals have been asked to evacuate it and move to safer places. Casualties have occurred with many historical sites lying in complete ruins.
The effects of the quake had been felt in other parts of neighbouring nations too, like in the Northern part of Gujarat, though no much destruction has been recorded. The death toll in Nepal, however, has been on a rise.
