Former military dictator Mr Muhammadu Buhari emerged victorious in the Nigerian Presidential Elections 2015, leaving behind the rival and incumbent president Goodluck Jonathan with 15,424,921 votes. This presidential election has indeed been a historic one, as for the first time in the nation’s history an incumbent President has been defeated and the party ruling for the past 16 years has been routed out.

Buhari was declared the winner of the elections by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. President Goodluck Jonathan conceded his defeat soon after congratulating Buhari on his victory. The 72-year-old stood victorious this time, after having being defeated thrice.

Interestingly, Mr Buhari, who subsisted a probable attack from the violent Boko Haram terror group, won a majority from the region terribly vandalized by the terror group. In fact, the BBC reported, that in the state of Borno, which has recently witnessed terror attacks, Buhari secured 94% votes.

Many of those who have voted for him believe that he will defeat Boko Haram, thus fortifying the nation from its fear and violence.

Buhari thanked all his supporters, party workers and addressed Nigerians at 11am on Wednesday. Supporters thronged the streets, meanwhile, from early morning as his victory became evident, especially in the areas where the influence of Buhari’s party was running high.

Mr Buhari’s wife, Mrs Aaisha Buhari congratulated her husband for his victory by tweeting, “I am so proud of my husband and the team who have worked hard to make this happen.”

Soon after the declaration of Buhari’s victory, his party called for a calm and sober celebration, in a statement issued, warning its supporters against getting aggressive on the rival party workers.
