Pakistan’s presumptive Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif said that the country is facing serious problems due to terrorism and it “should be taken seriously.” He called for peace talks with Pakistani Taliban militants.
In his speech to his newly elected party members in Lahore, Sharif said, “All options should be tried, and guns are not a solution to all problems. Why shouldn’t we sit and talk, engage in dialogue?”
Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani met Sharif last Saturday and they discussed on possible peace deal with the Taliban.
“We sincerely desire that all those who have strayed and have picked up arms against the nation return to the national fold. However, this is only possible once they unconditionally submit to the state, its constitution and the rule of law,” Kayani told media.
The Pakistani Taliban militants have been fighting with the Pakistani government as well as US forces for the last several years and thousands of people have been killed in this so-called war. Taliban militants want to enforce Islamic law in the country and want end of Pakistan’s coalition with the United States.
The Taliban meanwhile have reportedly shown their willingness to negotiate with Sharif.
