For the first time in US history, a woman has been chosen to lead their Secret Service. Veteran agent Julia Pierson will lead the Secret Service agency, replacing Mark Sullivan who had retired last month.
“Julia is eminently qualified to lead the agency that not only safeguards Americans at major events and secures our financial system, but also protects our leaders and our first families, including my own,” President Barack Obama announced on Tuesday.
The secret service is hit by the worst ever scandal in its history involving male agents and prostitutes in Colombia. Mark Sullivan was highly criticised for his role as the head of the secret service.
Pierson started her career as special agent with the Miami field office in 1983, she became deputy assistant director of the Office of Protective Operations in 2005.
