Israel and Hamas conflict intensifies: Over 500 Palestinians killed so-far; Security Council calls for an immediate ceasefire

As the battle between Israel and Hamas entered into its 13th day, more than 100 casualties were reported from Gazan cities. Reports claimed that Israel launched another attack, one of the largest bombardments ever since this conflict has begun. According to an AFP report published by the Times of India, Israel stepped up a major offensive, in the bloodiest single day in the Security Council calls for an immediate ceasefire  battered enclave in five years.

The U.N too is mentioning their concerns for this conflict. The U.N as well as the United States President Barack Obama has called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. This came in after Israel launched a deadly attack on Gaza on Sunday. U.N’s Security Council has called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The U.N General Secreatary met Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani as well as Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Doha yesterday. A close door meeting took place between them.

Mr Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary General of the U.N said, “As I travel the region, I will continue to press for an immediate ceasefire – an immediate end to the Israeli military operation in Gaza and the rocket fire by Hamas and Islamic Jihad. While I was en route to Doha, dozens more civilians, including children, have been killed in Israeli military strikes in Shejaiyah neighbourhood in Gaza.

Mr Ban Ki-Moon also condemned this atrocious action and said that Israel must exercise maximum restraint and do far more to protect civilians.

According to the Israeli Defence Force, Hamas has told the Palestinian civilians to ignore their warnings. IDF also claimes that Hamas encouraged them to be Hamas shields. Hamas, reports claim, is using civilians as human shields.

Information provided by the IDF says that 2 terrorist’s squads infiltrated Israel through a tunnel from North Gaza. IDF aircraft struck squad and their forces killed 10 terrorists.

Israel and Hamas conflict intensifiesIDF’s Chief of Staff issued a statement which said, “We have moral obligations to avoid civilian casaulities. We also have moral obligation to defend our people. There are no militaries like ours. There are no militaries that drop leaflets and telephone civilians before a strike. We will continue offering help [to Gaza]… Even as we fight the enemy, we are transferring humanitarian assistance.”

Venezuelan PRESIDENT Maduro has condemnded the invasion of Gaza. He has said that Israel is committing genocide.

An informative opinion piece on Washington Post by Prf. Nathan Brown suggests, “As a movement, Hamas offers resistance — attacking civilians, launching rockets and ransoming captives — but it cannot field a military force that could face Israel on the battlefield. Indeed, all the ground combat is happening in Gaza; Israeli territory remains relatively unscathed. As of Saturday, at least four Israelis had been killed in the latest round of fighting, while Israel’s actions had led to more than 330 Palestinian deaths. So it is absolutely true that Hamas does not pose an existential threat to Israel.”

It further suggests, “However, more than Israel’s existence is being threatened. The abduction and murder of three Israeli teens last month may or may not have been a Hamas operation — but the event captured the attention of the Israeli public, and the Israeli government reacted as if Hamas were responsible. While the effectiveness of Israel’s Iron Dome antimissile system is debated — officials boast that it intercepts 90 percent of Hamas’s missiles — large parts of the Israeli population now feel within Hamas’s reach as the range of its rockets creeps higher. Some have relocated farther away from Gaza, and those who remain show signs of stress. Israel’s political, military and security leaders are focused on deterring the rocket attacks.”

Reports claim that Israel had been completely offensive on Gaza on Sunday midnight when it killed more than 100 Palestinians in an attack. The death toll in Gaza has crossed 500.

Ceasefire.Gaza_.15July2014This conflict between Israel and Gaza has seriously led to tremendous causalities. People in Gaza are living under tremendous fear of these attacks. Even on social networking sites, people are posting their views condemning this conflict which is destroying residents from the land.

There was a tweet put up by @Sheenaabidashah who said, “To me #Israel did the same thing with Palestinians what Hitler did with Europe or White Americans did with Native Americans.”

On 18th July, the Times of Israel reported that, thousands of protesters in numerous cities worldwide took to the streets Thursday and Friday, from Cairo to Istanbul to Washington, to demand an immediate halt of Israel’s ground incursion in the Gaza Strip and call on the international community to intervene on behalf of Gazans.

There is a complete anger among people. In New Delhi, protests were held against Israel’s offensive against the Gazan residents. All India Peace Solidarity Organisation (AIPSO), the Palestinian Solidarity Committee in India and the Indian People in Solidarity with Gaza help protests in New Delhi. The protesters marched up to Israel’s embassy in New Delhi.
