As the conflict between Israel and Gaza has paused, a way is being sorted out to maintain peace in these conflict-torn regions. The whole world has witnessed this ugly conflict between the two. Silence has filled in the atmosphere that was full with sounds of bombings, rocket sirens and yells of people. People there are trying to get back to their places and avail their things from there. A difficult phase it has been for the local residents as well as others who have been watching and tracking the story closely.
Well, this ceasefire was sincerely followed by both Israel and Gaza. Both the nations have been urging for peace in the region. But as this ceasefire is coming to an end today, let us see what all has happened in these days.
Peace talks took place between Israel and Gaza. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has maintained his point that it would not compromise the security and safety of its citizens. On the other hand, Hamas wants to bring an end to the rockets being fired.
These peace talks took place at Cairo in Egypt and this came in after the recent deployment of another ceasefire.
A member of the Palestinian delegation told The Associated Press on Sunday that the gaps between the sides were still significant and that it was far from certain whether a deal could be reached before the cease-fire expires. This same member told A.P, on the request of anonymity that they were less optimistic that they were earlier.
An AP report reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told his Cabinet that Hamas had suffered a huge setback in the four-week war, which would be reflected in the Cairo talks. The same report said that Sami Abu Zuhri, a Hamas spokesman in Gaza, directed equally tough words at Israel.
Ever since this conflict has broken down between Israel and Palestine, it has led to huge devastation of life and property in both the countries but more in Gaza.
As the recent ceasefire continued, UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon warned of an almost guaranteed round of violence and vengeance. “They have not been listening to the voices of the international community and concerns raised by myself as the Secretary-General and many world leaders in the region and around the world,” said Mr. Ban while speaking to journalists.
According to UN figures, nearly 2,000 Palestinians were killed in the month-long fighting, almost 75 per cent of them civilians while on the Israeli side at least 67 people were killed.The number of Palestinian deaths includes 459 children. UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near Easthas reported that 209,522 people are still sheltering in 88 UNRWA schools in the area.
“While Israel’s duty to protect its citizens from rocket attacks by Hamas and other threats is unquestionable, the fighting has raised serious concerns about Israel’s respect for the principles of distinction and proportionality,” Mr. Ban said.
It is really high time both the nations realize that they shouldn’t proceed fighting further. There is a good chance for both Israel and Gaza to cease this conflict through these peace talks being held there. But a product of this peace talk and the aftermath of the ceasefire will be in public domain soon. For now, all that we can do is hope for a positive outcome.
