The minaret of Syria’s famous 11th-century mosque at Aleppo city has been destroyed on Wednesday during the clashes between the rebels and President Bashar Assad’s troops. Umayyad Mosque was labeled as a UNESCO world heritage site and was the main attraction of Aleppo’s walled Old City.
The government has accused rebels of destroying the minaret of the Umayyad Mosque. The rebels in turn blamed the government saying it was hit by Syrian army tank fire.
“This is like blowing up the Taj Mahal or destroying the Acropolis in Athens. This mosque is a living sanctuary. This is a disaster. In terms of heritage, this is the worst I’ve seen in Syria. I’m horrified,” said Helga Seeden, a professor of archaeology at the American University of Beirut.
