American President Barack Obama confirmed that the United States believes the Syrian government carried out a deadly chemical weapons attack on civilians. Obama, however, did not produce any direct evidence to back up the claim.
As rumours mounting on America’s possible attack on Syria, Obama said White House is currently evaluating potential military retaliation.
“We have concluded that the Syrian government in fact carried these out. And if that’s so, then there need to be international consequences,” Obama said on Wednesday during a TV interview .
USA faced as unexpected hurdle on Wednesday on the usage of force against Syria as the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council did not agree on a draft resolution prepared by UK. Russia already has expressed their reservation against any such attack.
Obama, meanwhile, said that USA will go ahead alone if necessary.
“The United States are able to make their own decisions,” Obama told reporters late Wednesday. “We do have to make sure that when countries break international norms on weapons like chemical weapons that could threaten us, that they are held accountable,” he added.
Syrian President Bashar Assad, however, has denied the charges.
