A crowded Nigerian mosque came under attack on Friday, as terrorists open fired and set-off three bombs in the premises of North Nigeria’s Central Mosque. All of this happened when the worshippers had gathered there to offer Friday prayers at the Mosque.
The incident happened at around 2 in the noon when the Jumaat service was going on. Followed were gun fires, triggering utter chaos and leading to people running helter-skelter for their lives. Reports also suggested that three bombs went off one after the other, before gun fires were shot at the people.
The security operations soon began in the area but the security officials were not able to confirm the exact figure of casualties. The spokesperson for the Joint Task Force confirmed the news of a blast.
The Friday’s attack is said to have happened when the chief Imam of the Central Mosque was delivering sermons. An eye-witness told Nigerian newspaper The Punch that the prayer session was bought to a halt as thousands of worshippers scampered for safety and security men were trying to control the situation with little success.
A security source who declined to be named told Reuters that three bombs were planted in the courtyard to the mosque and they went off simultaneously. Rescue operations were conducted by the security officials in the immediate aftermath of the attack.
At least 35 are believed to have died and many injured in this attack. The exact numbers are not known as the rescue operation is still in progress.
