German Chancellor Angela Merkel reportedly annoyed with US following the alleged reports of her cellphone being targeted by American intelligence.
Makel called President Barack Obama and asked for explanations over reports that the US National Security Agency was spying her mobile phone. She told Obama that “spying among friends cannot be.” She said that US needs to restore trust among friends and allies, “such trust now has to be built anew.”
“She (Merkel) unmistakably disapproves of and views as completely unacceptable such practices, if the indications are authenticated. This would be a serious breach of confidence. Such practices have to be halted immediately,” Merkel’s spokesman, Steffen Seibert said.
Merkel also told President Obama that she expected US “to supply information over the possible scale of such eavesdropping practices against Germany and reply to questions that the federal government asked months ago.”
The White House denied charges and said US isn’t monitoring Merkel’s calls.
“The president assured the chancellor that the United States is not monitoring and will not monitor the communications of the chancellor,” The White House spokesman Jay Carney said.
Before Merkel France’s President François Hollande also called Obama and demanded explanation over the reports that the NSA was monitoring the communications of French people.
