Syriza party leader Alexis Tsipras was sworin-in as the Prime Minister of Greece on Monday, in less than 24-hours after winning the polls that took place on Sunday. Tsipras, whose party had contested the polls on the grounds of finishing austerity, won 149 seats in the 300 seat parliament, just two seat short for an absolute majority.
The Syriza party entered into a coalition with centre-right Independent Greeks party, which won 13 seats in the elections. Tsipras was sworn-in after the coalition was formed, on Monday, once results emerged. Tsipras has promised to finish austerity, humiliation and suffering imposed by the international creditors.
Massive challenged are lying ahead of this new government, renegotiation of bailouts being a crucial one. The Syriza leader has vowed to renegotiate the bailouts, which are worth €240bn (£179bn; $268bn), reported the BBC.
The BBC quoted European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker, who congratulated Tsipras and tweeted: “The European Commission stands ready to continue assisting Greece in achieving these goals.”
