Five people including a woman were killed in a clash between police and supporters of Islamist parties on Sunday in Manikganj, Bangladesh.
Over 50 people were injured and taken to nearby hospital.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon when police fired during violent clash between Islamists and anti-strike demonstrators led by Awami League leader.
12 Islamist parties including Jamaat-e-Islami have called for a nationwide strike demanding execution of “atheist and anti-Islam bloggers” for insulting Islam.
16 policemen were also injured in the clash.
“They (Islamists) attacked us with large heavy knives, sticks, bricks and firearms from three sides…We had to use gunshots and tear gas shells for self-defence,” a police officer told TV channels.
The bloggers have launched campaign against fundamentalist parties and demand death penalty of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders in 1971 “war crimes”.
