The heads of the European Union have proposed for an emergency summit on ways to stop the number of immigrants risking the dangerous journey across the waters of the Mediterranean.
More than 800 people have drowned in Libya’s coast on Sunday, with the death toll rising this year to 1,750. Heads of nations have expressed great concerns over the same with the Italian PM Matteo Renzi calling for immediate and direct action against the human smugglers, Describing them and their disgusting operation as the ‘slave traders of the 21st Century.’
A draft statement for public release after Thursday’s meeting in Brussels, seen by AFP news agency, says leaders shall commit to “undertake systematic efforts to identify, capture and destroy vessels before they are used by traffickers”. The leaders are also expected to discuss what to do with those migrants who reach the coasts of the European continent. A proposal for them is likely to be spread out more equally among all EU states and that would be viewed as a huge issue, probably that would affect and result into division of unity.
The number of people fleeing war, poverty and other economic crisis in the Middle East and African nations has increased as of late, leading to large scores trying to reach Europe in desperate and adverse attempts in unseaworthy and often overcrowded tanks and vessels.
The International Organisation for Migration reports that there have been around 30 times as many deaths so far in the year 2015 as compared to the same period last year and the figure could rise to 30,000. More than 500 lives had been rescued from several other boats and were brought ashore by Italian life and coastguards on Wednesday.
