A train, specially designed to transport water, also dubbed as ‘Water Express’, carrying about five lakh litres of water reached Latur – a town severely hit by drought, 500km away from the state capital – early this morning, hours behind the expected time.
How precious water has become was evident from the tight-lipped security deposed at the railway station to avoid riots in access to the water.
The train with ten wagons took eighteen hours instead of six hours to reach Latur, from Miraj, about 300 km distance away from the destination.
Said Pandurang Pole, Collector of Latur: “This was just a trial run. Speed is not a consideration. It reached as scheduled in the morning.”
The water from the wagons will be taken for purification, from where it will be disbursed through commercial water tanker connectivity.
