The weather department on Wednesday, issued a cyclone alert for north Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh.
The cyclone build-up has been identified in a domain, in the Bay of Bengal about 90 km east of Chennai, said officials, and the system will intensify into a cyclone in 24 to 48 hours. The wind speed is expected to reach 75 km per hour.
Very heavy precipitation is expected in next 24 hours in Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu and also in Puducherry.
The depression over south-west Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards in the past six hours and lay centered at 05:30 hours IST near Latitude 13.0ºN and Longitude 80.8ºE, about 90 km east of Chennai and about 70 km from the coast. The system is likely to move north-northeastwards and intensify into a deep depression and further into a cyclonic storm within the next 48 hours.
Fishermen have been advised against venturing into sea along and off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh, Kerala coasts and Lakshadweep area during the next 48 hours.
