A famous church in the heart of Agra was vandalized during the wee hours on Thursday by an unidentified group of people. The property of St. Mary’s church was damaged by this unknown group, which barged inside with the intention to vandalize it. The church is located in the Cantonment’s Partabpur area.
According to several reports, a function was organised by the church which continued till 1 am.
“The guests left by 1.20am and we were also preparing to go to bed when we heard loud noises. We rushed outside to find some men trying to break the church’s main door with huge wooden logs and iron rods. They ran away on seeing us,” a staff member of the church said.
The staff member claimed that two holy statues of Mother Mary and Jesus Christ were damaged during the vandalism staged by the unidentified group. A few cars parked outside the Church premises were also damaged by the vandals.
As soon as the news of the attack spread, members of the community gathered at the location.
“This is unfortunate. We demand that the miscreants should be arrested within 24 hours and our institutions, not just here but across the country, should be provided security,” Father Moon, the church priest, said.
“We have registered an FIR against unknown persons and assure that the miscreants will be arrested soon,” Senior SP Agra Rajesh Modak told the media.
However, the Agra police had not made any arrests till the time this report was filed on Friday.
