The death penalty was pronounced on Chandrabhan Sanap by a special women’s court in Mumbai for assaulting and raping Esther Anuhya early last year. The court also sentenced Sanap to life imprisonment for the crime he committed.
Confirming that the case fell into the “rarest of rare” category, the court has ordered Sanap to pay a compensation of Rs 50,000 to Anuhya’s family, while sentencing him to seven years for kidnapping Anuhya, committing robbery and destructing the evidence.
While pronouncing the quantum of punishment on Friday, Judge Vrushali Joshi said, “He shall be hanged by his neck till death.”
Esther Anuhya, a software engineer was offered a lift by Sanap in the early morning as she arrived in the city on January 5, 2014. He later assaulted her, raped and killed her, before setting her body on fire and fleeing away from the spot. The police had later traced and nabbed him via the CCTV footage from Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
