The Delhi Municipal Corporation, which had its polls in 13 wards on 15th May, released its results today, showing the Aam Aadmi Party leading with a victory in 5 wards.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won in Nanakpura through candidate Anil Malik and in Matiala, Vikas Nagar and Tekhand; under candidates Ramesh, Ashok Kumar, and Abhishekh Bidhuri, respectively. It also won in Ballimaran under Mohd. Sadiq.
However they were disappointed as they wanted to repeat the feat they performed in the assembly elections when they won all thirteen seats.
These polls were conducted because Delhi councilors had contested for the Assembly elections and won leaving some seats vacant.
These polls also proved as a test to the AAP’s claim of its popularity in the capital ahead of 2017 assembly polls.
Their opponents Congress and BJP, were left not too far and secured 4 and 3 wards respectively in the elections, while an independent candidate, who is likely to join AAP, won one of the wards.
Dr. Mahender Nagpal, Bhupinder Mohan Bhandari, and Krishan Gahlot won from BJP in Shalimar Bagh North, Wazirpur and Nawada wards respectively. Where as Krishan Gahlot won with a whooping 10,389 votes as opposed to his nearest opponent, who lost securing 5546 votes.
The congress won four seats in Jhilmil, Khichripur, Munirka and Qumaruddin Nagar under Pankaj, SH. Anand Kumar, Yogita Rathee and Ashok Bharadwaj respectively.
The elections received a discouraging 45% turn-up on the election day.
Expressing his happiness, Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted “MCD ruled by BJP-Cong. Outsider AAP wins max seats in by-election. Thnx Delhi for reaffirming faith. Ab MCD election mein sabhi seat jeetni hai (Need to win in MCD election too).”
