Former Gujarat minister and BJP leader Maya Kodnani and Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi has been convicted by the special court in the infamous Naroda Patia massacre case which occurred during Gujarat riots in 2002. The court has convicted 32 people and acquitted 29. This is the first time that the high profile politicians get punished for their direct connection in the notorious Gujarat riots.
97 people were brutally killed at Naroda on February 28, 2002 in Gujarat. The incident took place after Godhra riots. The honourable Supreme Court set up a special investigation team (SIT) to investigate the case. The testimony of Naroda Patiya massacre case trail started in August 2009 and SIT named former Modi government minister Maya Kodnani’s name. Incidentally Maya Kodnani is the first BJP MLA to be convicted in the Gujarat riot case.
Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi along with the ruling Narendra Modi government denied any conspiracy theory and direct hands in the riots for years. But at last truth prevails and court has convicted them under Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 302 (murder) which leads to the maximum punishment of death penalty.
It again proves the establishment was directly involved in the Gujarat riots and did not take necessary actions to stop them; rather they were involved themselves in conspiracy to killing people for gaining political power.
