Toshiba Corp is planning to shut down three of its six discrete chip-making facilities in Japan after 31st March 2012. Discrete chips are used in a variety of electronic equipment.
The company plans to cut down the production of some other types of semiconductor chips as well because of sluggish demand. The strength of the Yen against the US Dollar has made matters worse for the company.
The production of analog chips and image sensors at Oita, discrete chips at Himeji, and photonic chips at Kita Kyushu is going to be halted temporarily by the end of this month.
