Call the Justice League because there is a new squad in town, and they certainly don’t look that friendly. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Suicide Squad is a dream come true for every person who has ever rooted for the bad guy to come up at the top as it brings together DC’s elite class of super villains. When you have villains as powerful as The Joker, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Killer Croc, Enchantress, Katana, Captain Boomerang, Slipknot, Rick Flagg and El Diablo, mayhem and insanity is something that will be synonymous to the entire film.
Intelligence officer, Amanda Walker decides to put together a team of incarcerated supervillains for a top- secret US mission and thus begins the journey of the Suicide Squad. They have to a deal with a mysterious and powerful person/organization, all while dealing with the antics of audience favorite, The Joker.
Ever since the project was announced, every move by the production house made the headlines. It all started when Jared Leto was chosen to bring to life The Joker. Though there have been many portrayals of the Joker, the late Heath Ledger’s brilliant take on the Dark Knight’s nemesis remains a fan favourite. Not to mention, he was awarded with the Academy Award for it. So naturally, there were, and still are, a lot of fans who believe that Ledger’s legacy cannot be outmatched. But when we got our first glimpse at the green haired maniac, we were all impressed. Those signature scars, ever ‘not at all friendly’ smile, and those dead eyes were all there. And this began, Leto’s journey as The Joker. Slowly, other members joined the cast. Margot Robbie, after a brilliant performance in The Wolf of Wall Street, was chosen to play the devious Harley Quinn, who also happens to be the Joker’s girlfriend, Will Smith was casted as Deadshot, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Adewale Akinnuoye- Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Jay Hernandez as Diablo, Adam Beach as Slipknot and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag. After giving an Emmy winning performance as the manipulative Professor Annalise Keating, Viola Davis seemed like the perfect casting for the strong and intimidating Amanda Walker. Also, Ben Affleck comes back as Bruce Wayne/ Batman. How can anyone not be excited for this!
But the officials as Warner Brothers know exactly how a movie with just strong and powerful characters but without any or too much depth in the script does at the box office. ( Yes, I am talking about Batman V Superman). Therefore, the next task that lay before them was to have the perfect mix of strength, humour and story to their script. And if the trailers and short clips are anything to go by, they have absolutely nailed the formula.
Almost all the characters are introduced in the first trailer, with their craziness and those sparks that every twisted character has in their eyes, clearly showing. Though we just get a glimpse of Leto’s Joker in the first trailer, he looks menacing and dangerous. The people behind the camera seem to have done a great job at staying true to the source material by adopting similar, if not exactly the same, outfits and equipments for the characters.
As the new trailer and short clips made it to the fans, the wait got even more difficult. I mean seriously, who can keep their calm when Batman is disturbing Harley and Joker’s date night! Come on Batman, even villains deserve some romantic time together.
DC has a lot riding on this movie, as it is expected to mark their supremacy at the box-office as well as prove to everyone that Batman V Superman was a one time thing and that they are as strong and creative a bunch as their contemporaries at Marvel. Sure, basing your movie solely on super villains might have been a risk a few years ago, but now, everybody likes a good bad guy. And when the bad guys look this strong, funny and dangerous, it is sure going to be a thrillingly beautiful experience.
Finally, to quote Sir James Moriarty, “ Every fairytale needs a good old fashioned villain” or on this case, a squad of those!
