The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has today announced this year’s Oscar nominations.
Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” leads the list with 11 nominations including Best Picture and Best Director.
‘Hugo’ will compete with this year’s favourite ‘The “Artist”- a silent, black & white tribute to old Hollywood. It earned 10 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor.
Other seven nominees for the ‘Best Picture’ category are – “The Descendants”; “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close”; “The Help”; “Midnight in Paris”; “Moneyball”; “The Tree of Life”; “War Horse.”
In the Best Actor category Brad Pitt (Moneyball) will compete against best pal George Clooney (The Descendants), Demian Bichir (A Better Life), Jean Dujardin (The Artist) and Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).
Golden Globe winners Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) and and Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn) will face each other in the Best Actress category, along with Glenn Close (Albert Nobbs), Viola Davis (The Help), Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo).
Two-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep earned record 17 time nominations at the Oscar.
Woody Allen also got nomination in the Best Director category for his film “Midnight in Paris”.
The Oscar ceremony will be held on February 26 at the Kodak Theatre, Los Angeles.
