The prestigious Cannes Film Festival opens on Wednesday night with filmmaker Steven Spielberg and director Baz Luhrmann’s latest “The Great Gatsby.”
Amid heavy rain, the most-anticipated Film Festival on French Riviera began with the 3-D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan and Leonardo DiCaprio declared the 66th Cannes official opening.
‘The Great Gatsby’ stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Amitabh Bachchan present on the opening day function. “Gatsby” opened with a solid show at the box office, earning $51.1 million since its release in North America a week ago.
This year’s Cannes jury president is renowned film-maker Steven Spielberg. The jury team includes Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, Japanese director Naomi Kawase, French actor Daniel Auteuil, Oscar winning actress Nicole Kidman, Oscar winning Director Ang Lee, actor Christoph Waltz and Bollywood actor Vidya Balan.
Over the next 12 days, dozens of films across the world will be premiered on Cannes’ global stage.
