Bryan Cranston to Produce and Star in Philip Dick’s Anthology Series

Producers who work on both movies as well as TV shows have been depending on works of literature for inspiration on providing new content to viewers. The numbers of book-to-screen adaptations have increased over the years.

In an era when even books that are mediocre at best are getting live action adaptations, it may be difficult to select the ones that are actually worth giving a chance. Very recently, reports have surfaced of one such adaptation viewers may want to look out for.

Popular actor Bryan Cranston is reportedly all set to produce and star in an anthology series titled ‘Electric Dreams: The World of Philip K. Dick’ based works of Philip K. Dick. The show will consist of 10 parts, each telling a stand-alone tale set in the worlds created by the author.  Electric Dreams will mostly follow the sci-fi/drama genre, as is the case with Dick’s literary works.

Philip K. Dick is famous for his works such as ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep’, ‘A Scanner Darkly’, and ‘VALIS trilogy’. His books have also served as the basis for several popular films including Blade Runner, Minority Report, and Total Recall (1990). He has won several awards and accolades including a Hugo Award for his novel ‘The Man in the High Castle’ which recently got a series adapted that was welcomed positively by critics and viewers.

However, perhaps the most intriguing factor about this adaptation is the involvement of Bryan Cranston. Cranston was popular for his works in shows like ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ and ‘Kings of Queens’ and has made appearances in movies as well. He gained a husky reputation for himself after delivering an outstanding performance in the modern classic Breaking Bad. Cranston is reported to star in the series as well as serve as an executive producer.

“This is an electric dream come true. We are so thrilled to be able to explore and expand upon the evergreen themes found in the incredible work of this literary master,” said Cranston. He has also worked as the director in a few episodes of shows including Breaking Bad, Modern Family, and Malcolm in the Middle. Whether or not he will take up that helm in Electric Dreams remains to be seen. Either way, Bryan Cranston’s attachment to the project ought to earn it a decent share of attention from critics and viewers.

Ronald D. Moore, best known for his works on Star Trek, BattlestarGalactica, and Outlander, is also set to act as the executive producer of the show, along with the likes of Michael Dinner, Matt DeRoss, and David Kanter. Electric Dreams will be distributed by Sony Pictures Television and will premiere on the UK’s Channel  4. There has been no news regarding when the show will start production.

About Nisanth Suresh

I’m a Commerce student hailing from a small town in Ernakulam, Kerala. I am something of a cinephile, enjoy reading comics and fictional novels in my free time. I fell in love with TV shows after discovering the classic sitcom F.R.I.E.N.D.S when I was 13 years old. Over several years and a load of other shows, I discovered the strength of television as a medium for long-term, compelling story-telling. What started out as a leisure time hobby is now a passion and I’m always in search of great new shows to watch. I never miss out on opportunities to discuss about the shows that I love and hate and now utilize my position at SpectralHues to share my views with the rest of you.
