The summer season of TV has come to an end and Fall is right about to start signifying the return of a horde of mainstream shows with plenty of new shows set to premiere. Although there are a number of new series debuting this month, it’s the returning ones that look much more promising. Amidst the innumerable great shows starting this month, here are 5 shows that seem unique and worth spending time on:
Marvel’s Luke Cage
Luke Cage is the latest addition to Marvel’s roster of superhero shows on Netflix targeted at a mature audience. The show is about the titular character, Luke Cage, who gains superhuman strength along with indestructible skin as the result of an experiment and starts fighting crime. While Daredevil was purely a gritty superhero drama and Jessica Jones a neo-noir show with a psychological dimension, Luke Cage looks like it will be a raw street-level gangster drama with a superhuman thrown into the mix. Veteran comic-book writer, Jeph Loeb, is serving as the executive producer of the show. Mike Colter will play Luke Cage as he had previously done in Jessica Jones. The rest of the cast consists of Mahershala Ali as Cottonmouth – the show’s villain, Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, and Rosario Dawson will reprise her role as Claire Temple.
All episodes of Luke Cage will be available for streaming from September 30th.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season 4
One of the most anticipated returning sitcoms this fall season is Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Since its premiere in 2013, Brooklyn Nine-Nine has received praise from critics and viewers for bringing something fresh to the table amidst the sea of formulaic sitcoms on air now and has picked up a big fan-following over the last three years. The show is about the lives of a group of detectives working in the fictional 99th precinct of New York City Police Department. Led by a likeable ensemble cast including Andy Samberg and Andre Braugher, Brooklyn Nine-Nine was a new approach to the cop-procedural format. It has won several awards over its three seasons including two Emmy awards.
The fourth season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine will begin on September 20th.
Pitch
Pitch is an upcoming sports-drama produced by Fox. It was created by Dan Fogelman who is known for writing the screenplays of animated movies like Tangled, Zootopia, Cars, and also movies like Crazy, Stupid, Love and The Neighbours. Being a drama, Pitch is a step in a different direction for Dan Fogelman. Fogelman is also the show’s executive producer along with Academy Award winner Tony Bill and Emmy winner Paris Barclay, who has directed the show. Pitch’s plot is about a young girl named Ginny Baker who becomes the first female player in Major League Baseball. Kylie Bunbury, who has appeared in shows like Twisted and Under the Dome will play the role of Ginny Baker in Pitch.
Pitch will premiere on September 22nd
Narcos: Season 2
Narcos is one of those shows that came out without much fuss surrounding it and quickly turned into a sensation. Based on true incidents, the show tells the story of the rise and fall of Colombian drug-lord and crime kingpin, Pablo Escobar, and the American DEA’s attempts to bring him down. Narcos premiered in 2015 and was welcomed with mixed reception by critics. However, the show’s thrilling plot, unique style blended with actual archived footage, and a great cast secured it a large fan-following. Narcos is one of the most popular shows produced by Netflix so far. All of the show’s main cast including Wagner Moura, Boyd Holbrook, and Pedro Pascal are set to reprise their roles in season two, which is being promoted under the tagline, ”Who killed Pablo?”
Season two of Narcos will be available from September 2nd.
Empire: Season 3
Focusing on the hip hop music industry, Empire is a musical drama created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong for Fox in 2015. Empire’s story is set around a company named Entertainment Empire founded by a former drug dealer named Lucious Lyon who is diagnosed with ASL, throwing his family into a conflict to gain power of the company. The show features a starry cast led by Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson with several popular celebrities and musicians like Pitbull and Chris Rock.
