Based on Vertigo’s comic series of the same name, Preacher is a supernatural drama developed for AMC by Seth Rogan, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Caitlin. The first season of Preacher came to an end earlier in August. Given the reputation of its source material and the names attached to the cast and crew behind the show, Preacher was one of the most anticipated shows of 2016. Considering this, it is quite an accomplishment for the show’s developers for delivering a humorously gory first season, which was a treat for new viewers and fans of the comic-series alike.
Set in Texas, Preacher’s plot is centered on the preacher of a small church named Jesse Custer who is possessed by a mysterious entity granting him supernatural abilities. With his new powers, Jesse decides to make amends to his wayward life and deal with his dark past, accompanied by a vampire named Cassidy and his old lover, Tulip. Jesse’s life is made even more difficult when his church is threatened by a local industrial tycoon while being hunted by other-worldly beings seeking to imprison the creature possessing his body. The best thing about Preacher, perhaps, is how its plot summary barely covers how wild the show actually is.
Preacher exhibits all the definite features of a good AMC show. It starts out slow in an ambiguous manner and takes enough time to set up all the main and supporting characters while the main plot subtly develops in the background. But, the show does it in a way that keeps the viewer engaged at all times without giving off the impression of a drag. In addition, Preacher also has a unique visual style of and cinematography that makes it an absorbing experience, reminiscent of AMC’s own other classics like. The presentation of flashback sequences in the form of vintage black and white movies and the usage of foreshadowing are some such instances. Preacher also contains plenty of gore and some well-choreographed action sequences.
The show’s first-half which introduces the main plot and a story unrelated to it is a bit hard to follow at times. It is only in the sixth episode that viewers are finally offered some answers, kicking off its eventful and highly entertaining second-half. Episodes six and eight along with the premiere and finale are the finest episodes of the show. Preacher manages to always be eerie without being scary. The various plotlines introduced throughout the season are rounded up in the finale which is equally humorous and thrilling, giving an extremely satisfying pay off to all the suspense in the plot while setting things in motion for its second season and introducing a larger plot. At the end, Preacher felt like a ten-episode long prologue for a bigger story.
Preacher’s cast was one of the major factors which garnered it attention during the production stage itself. The lead role of Jesse Custer is played by Dominic Cooper while Ruth Negga played Tulip O’Hare and Joseph Gilgun played Cassidy, Jesse’s friend who is a vampire. Preacher’s cast also included Jack Earle Haley who portrayed the antagonistic Odin Quincannon and a supporting cast comprising of Anatol Yusef, Tom Brooke, and Graham McTavish. All the performances in the show were great. Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, and Jack Earle Haley were the actors who stood out from the rest of the cast. Jack Earle Haley was menacing as the bad guy but handled the humorous parts of the character well too. The characters played by these characters were just as good. All the characters were given great introductions and story arcs and each of them got their own moments to shine.
All things considered, Preacher is, without any doubts, an intriguing series. Overall, the show is an excellent blend of the fantasy-drama and black-humor genres touched with the AMC signature. Featuring an interesting plotline, likeable characters, and a talented cast, the show certainly proved to be a gratifying watch for both new viewers and fans who are familiar with its source material. A second season of Preacher has been confirmed to air in 2017.
