Movie Review: Ragini MMS 2

‘Ragini MMS 2’ begins with a disclaimer that it doesn’t promote a girl kissing another girl. Not very surprisingly, over an hour later we have Sunny Leone and Sandhya Mridul lip-locking on screen. Hear this – Leone who plays herself in the movie tells her director that she wants to do some research on her character before she shoots; pat comes the reply as she leaves – “Yeh Porno se Rituporno kab ban gayi”. There is also another scene in which our lead actress teases a co-star by moaning hard in front of the crew because he just mocked her acting abilities; once done, she tells him to re-think over what he said but only when his erection is over. If you don’t mind skin show, sex and corny dialogues in a movie and don’t expect logic either, chances are ‘Ragini MMS 2’ might entertain. The genre is ‘horrex’, as the makers like to call it – horror and sex.

Made on a shoestring budget, ‘Ragini MMS’ produced by Ekta and Shobha Kapoor did well. The sequel directed by Bhushan Patel (1920: Evil Returns) takes the ‘horrex’ quotient to another level and with Sunny Leone playing the lead, you might as well wonder what is in store. To start with, it begins where the previous flick ended and is rightly a sequel. A dirty weekend goes awry and Ragini (Kainaz Motivala) is now in a mental asylum being treated for multiple personality disorder. A director (Parvin Dabas) sees a good story in the incident and the MMS that shook the nation. He casts a porn star, Sunny Leone (Sunny Leone playing herself) to play the lead in his movie. After Sunny meeting Ragini, the crew moves to the same house (where Ragini and her boy-friend had drove away to) to shoot for the film. In the meantime, a world-renowned psychiatrist (Divya Dutta) takes up Ragini’s case and tries to unravel the mystery behind the incident. What we get is a back-story; a few scenes which might make you jump out of your seat and oodles of skin show.

sunnyleone-21It is an interesting idea and not really poorly directed but we can’t take any of the characters seriously. Combining horror with sex does the trick and the comic moments (some unintentional) add up in a way. However, the director resorts to the same old formula trying to get the audience spooked. The horror genre is the most difficult – I believe so and yet expect a genuinely good scare fest but mostly in vain. ‘Ragini MMS 2’ is yet another movie that fails to scare and even if there are a few spine-chilling scenes, they are but few and not original at that! Take for example the climax – clearly inspired by the one in ‘The Conjuring’ and better done, it would have been really blood-curdling had it been more original. The ghosts here still look spooky enough compared to most others but the back-story is too routine; reminded me of ‘The Ring’ and ‘The Grudge’. There was also no need of the romantic track and the song. Horror movies are best without songs and silly sub-plots. But the music is good; two songs are foot-tapping and groovy – ‘Baby Doll’ and ‘Chaar Bottle Vodka’. Background music (very important in horror) is okay. Some dialogues are hilarious and I wonder if they wrote it intentionally or not.

ragini-mms-2ghostSunny Leone is the lead actress here which means she shows off ample cleavage, wears skimpy outfits and is shown making out either because she is fantasizing about someone or somebody else in the crew is fantasizing about her. She doesn’t need to act here because she plays herself and well… she can’t act! But to give her due here, she is as bad an actress as the other ‘firangs’ in Bollywood are (and I’m even including Katrina Kaif here… her journey from ‘Boom’ to ‘Dhoom’ would never be possible had it not been for a certain Mr. Salman Khan). While Sunny should never attempt to act, she can well continue to sizzle; she looks pretty. Sandhya Mridul does a c-grade starlet act well and Divya Dutta adds weight. The supporting cast is okay.

Watch it or not: If you are expecting a good horror movie, you will remain disappointed. This isn’t one either! Watch it if you are in a mood for a few good scares and some skin show.

At the Box-Office: Hit. The low budget, the hype surrounding it, Sunny Leone in a tailor-made role and the two chartbusters will be reasons enough to bring in the crowd. Reviews will range from poor to good but won’t affect business.

If sex and skin-show are what you are looking for, ‘Ragini MMS 2’ is a decent orgasm to the build-up in its prequel. Horror movie buffs like me can still hope and wait! Alas! We need a miracle!
