Is the latest trend of roping in Salman Khan and making anything with some blunt dialogues and Rajnikanth-meets-Matrix action scenes fading away slowly? The question seems serious this time with Salman Khan’s latest release Jai Ho failing to make a mark for itself in the Bollywood grossing chart.
Till Thursday, Jai Ho’s box office collections have been Rs 88.78 crore. It poses no competition to Salman’s previous releases leave alone Dhoom 3 or Chennai Express. Jai Ho’s opening weekend figure of Rs 60.68 crore compares poorly with his last three films – Bodyguard (2011) did Rs 88.75 crore, Ek Tha Tiger (2012) Rs 100.16 crore and Dabangg 2 (2012) Rs 65 crore. The movie even has failed to reach the mark of 100 crore in domestic market in its first week.Though it has managed to get through its name in the 100 crore elite club in the second week of its release, the Salman Khan effect in its grossing seemed to have lost its previous glare at least.
After the slow dismal performances of the South Indian remakes that was started by Prabhudeva-Salman Khan duo with Wanted went gloomy with some recent not-so-good box-office records including Shahid Kapur’s R.. Rajkumar. And, the threat poses serious with Jai Ho’s failure for a spectacular grossing. Even, the first day’s collection was dismal – a meager 17.75 crore whereas Dhoom 3 collected a whipping 36.22 crore. Even a holiday weekend could not save it well.
And, the question remains. It gives a way to even another. Is it not the Salman Khan magic spelling weak for a script-less junk to make way? Hope not. The formula worked well for last many years. A skew in the brows – or a crossed finger, it is the time to change.
