Ustad Sultan Khan (born in 1940), the famous singer of Hindustani classical music and player of sarangi, passed away today in Mumbai after being ill for long.
Ustad Sultan Khan, along with Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell, was a member of the fusion group “Tabla Beat Science”.
Ustad Sultan Khan gave his first public performance at the age of 11.
He received several awards and honours during his illustrious career. He received the Sangeet Natya Academy Award twice. In 1998, he got the Gold Medalist Award of Maharashtra and the American Academy of Artists Award. He was awarded “Padma Bhushan” in 2010.
Ustad Sultan Khan received his training in music from his father Gulab Khan. He belonged to the Indore Gharana. Ustd Sultan Khan’s son Sabir Khan learnt music from his father; he is also a noted player of sarangi.
