Rebekah Brooks succumbed to pressure finally and submitted her resignation today as Chief Executive Officer of the scandal-hit News International.
Rebekah Brooks was editor in-charge when staff of News of the World allegedly started hacking mobile phones of military families, dead British soldiers, and murder victims, including the voice mail of a missing 13-year old girl Milly Dowler. She was the Editor of the tabloid from the year 2000 to 2003.
A spokesman for UK Prime Minister David Cameron expressed relief by calling it “the right decision”.
A spokesman of Britain’s Labour Party said, “It is right that Rebekah Brooks has resigned. No one should exercise power without responsibility. It is right that Rebekah Brooks has finally taken responsibility for the terrible events that happened on her watch, like the hacking of murder victim Milly Dowler‘s phone.”
He added, “Rupert Murdoch says that News Corp has handled these allegations ‘extremely well’. He still hasn’t apologized to the innocent victims of hacking. He clearly still doesn’t get it. When he comes to House of Commons next week, people will expect him to start taking some responsibility and apologise for the illegal actions which happened in his organization.”
Due to severe outrage from public on the phone tapping scandal British Prime Minister David Cameron was forced to take concrete steps including hiring a judge to investigate. Mr. Rupert Murdoch closed the News of the World tabloid and stopped his attempt to take full control of the lucrative British Sky Broadcasting.
