Steve Appleton (51), CEO and Chairman of Micron Technology, died in a plane crash on Friday. He was piloting the small plane which crashed at Boise Airport while attempting an emergency landing.
His death shocked Micron as well as the whole industry. President and COO Mark Durcan will take up the CEO’s responsibilities temporarily.
According to Boise police Appleton radioed problem after taking off and reaching an altitude of about 200 feet. He was asked to turn around the aircraft and while doing so it crashed.
Appleton joined Micron in 1983 and subsequently became the CEO of the company. Appleton was the youngest CEO on the Fortune 500 at the age of 34, in 1994.
