The king of all film festivals, Cannes is to film festivals what Oscars is to award shows. It includes new films and documentaries across all genres. From a star-studded carpet to powerful films and documentaries making a mark, this international film festival has everything, and going by the first few days of this year festivities, we hardly think it will be any different. Here is all that has happened since its opening:
BEST DRESSED
When you are attending the biggest film festival of the year, your red carpet style has to be of that mark, and this year the stars proved just that. It may have been only two days since the commencement of the festival, but the looks from the red carpet and grand dinners have already made many jaws dropped.
- Amal Clooney
When you make an appearance alongside George Clooney, it isn’t very easy to be the one who has all the spotlight on. But when you are Amal Clooney, dressed in a one shoulder, high slit, yellow, flowy Atelier Versace gown, it is one of the easiest things to do.
- Julia Roberts
The Pretty Woman actress stepped on the red carpet in a floor length black Armani gown with an elegant emerald necklace for the premier of her movie Money Monsters. Do we even have to go about her? Can she do anything wrong, especially with that drop-dead gorgeous smile? Oh, and yes, she was barefoot!
- Naomi Watts
This British beauty graced the red carpet in an Armani Privé Lilac Strapless Embellished gown, looking nothing less than a royalty. To complete the look, she opted for a multi-colored collar from Bulgari. She opted for the minimal makeup look, and boy, can we ever get enough of her?
- Blake Lively
Only two days in the festival and Blake Lively is already making everybody swoon with her effortless style. If her red Juan Carlos Obando creation was a refreshing change, the sequent cut-out gown looked ravishing on the mom-to-be. If that was not enough, she stepped out in a tailored black coat, complete with a plunging neckline, feathered sleeves and a feathered skirt from Salvatore Ferragamo’s runway collection for the gala dinner. Though her dresses were gorgeous enough, that lovely smile and radiant skin made her almost too good for this world.
- Kendall Jenner-
Everyone was eagerly waiting for the supermodel to take on the Cannes red carpet, because, let’s face it, her fashion game is always on the point. She finally made her debut in a strapless chiffon maxi dress with a plunging neckline and a high slit, showing off her toned body and those long legs which can make any one want to work out that often. Keeping her accessories minimal and adding a pop of red on her lips, her long awaited appearance was definitely worth it.
- Bella Hadid-
When you are supermodel Bella Hadid, there is no room for doing anything wrong on the red carpet. Dressed in Roberto Cavalli Couture gown designed by Peter Dungas, this sparkling metallic work gown with cutouts complimented the models ridiculously fit body. Add to that a stand-out necklace, a beautiful bracelet and some equally shimmering Stuart Weitzman heels, and you have yourself the perfect red carpet look.
HEADLINES
So what if just two days have gone by since the beginning of the coveted film festival? If you are talking about Cannes, you don’t have to wait for days for something note-worthy to happen. The entire world starts talking about it days before its inaugural, and things don’t change after it as well.
- Woody Allen rape joke-
Lauren Laffitte, who was given the role of anchoring the opening ceremony at Cannes’16, which happened to be the premier of Woody Allen’s Café Society ended up making quite an impression for not only her hosting skills but also her witty remark on Allen, saying, “It’s very nice that you’ve been shooting so many movies in Europe, even if you are not being convicted for rape in the U.S.” He seemed to have taken it quite humorously, and we are pretty thankful about it.
- Café Society opens the festival-
The much awaited Woody Allen film premiered and also opened the Cannes Film Festival 2016. With a star studded cast including the likes of Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg, this is a comedy set in 1930’s in New York and Hollywood. Could the festival have asked for a better opening than this? We think not.
- Money Monster Premier-
When you have two people as good looking and as talented as Julia Roberts and George Clooney together in a movie, there is not much one can expect from it apart from the fact that they will shine no matter what goes around them. This is exactly what happens in Money Monsters. Premiering at Cannes, this movie got a decent response from the film critics but the individual performances were applauded.
- Jury (Main Competition)-
What is a good film festival without a good jury? And when it comes to the best film festival, well, the answer is obvious. This year’s jury, led by George Miller as the President, includes Arnaud Desplechin, Kirsten Dunst, Valeria Golino, Mads Mikkelsen, Laszlo Nemes, Vanessa Paradis, Katayoon Shahabi and Donald Sutherland.
Well, that is a wrap on this week’s glamour, news and headlines from the ongoing Cannes Film Festival. Stay with us for all that is going to happen throughout the week ahead.
