Ever since the never-seen-before look of Alia Bhatt from her upcoming venture Udta Punjab has been unveiled, excitement among her followers is far from fading.
She is seen essaying the role of a migrant Bihari labourer in Udta Punjab and surely looks promising in her de-glam avatar. She recently launched the second song ‘Ikk Kudi’ at an event in Mumbai. This soulful rendition has been sung by Diljeet Dosanj, who is also debuting in Bollywood through Udta Punjab. This song depicts the journey of Alia`s character and is receiving tremendous response on social sites since its release.
Revealing a fun fact about her raw looks in the film, she said, “Usually when actors come on sets, the unit and the assistant directors run helter-skelter, readying the shot. But when I came on sets after costume and make up, no one noticed me. They were all just chilling and one assistant director even screamed at me.”
She, in the film, has to portray a sportsperson, which was personally challenging for her.
Reminiscing it, she says, “It was hectic and physically very demanding kind of a film. I had to push myself despite the injuries I had. I trained for hockey before starting the film. One would need to have a lot of years of practice to pull that off convincingly. I did try, worked hard, wanted to be comfortable with the hockey stick, and bring out a certain ease which comes from the body language of hockey players. There is a little strength and force and I wanted to bring that in my character.” She certainly owes it to the director, coach and students who helped her get into the skin of her character with ease.
Along with commendations came the criticism for Alia`s character. A journalist wrote an open letter to Alia calling her treatment of character as ‘concoction of stereotypes’. Also, her costumes in the film were condemned saying that not all Biharis are poor, because in the trailer, Alia is seen donning tattered, dull clothes. Later, even the actress Neetu Chandra, who belongs to Bihar, came out in support of this open letter.
However, an undeterred Alia, at the launch of Ikk Kudi, blatantly expressed her views on this criticism saying, “Anybody who makes assumptions on what we see on the trailer, it is better for us to keep quiet and not say anything because whatever people are assuming, especially the person in question over here, is assuming from the trailer, which could also possibly not true.” She believes that the trailer is just a hint of what the film is going to be and the real content lies in the actual movie.
The film showcases current jeopardy of Punjab, a state which has got succumbed to traps of drug addiction. Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, it is all set to hit the screens on June 17.
