Noted Bengali Novelist Syed Mustafa Siraj Passes Away

Renowned Bengali writer Syed Mustafa Siraj passed way today afternoon after long illness. He was 82.

Syed Mustafa Siraj wrote around 150 novels and 300 short stories. He is also the creator of famous detective character Colonel Niladri Sarkar. For his literary excellence he had received numerous awards including “Ananda Puraskar”, “Bankim Puraskar”, “Sahitya Akademy Puraskar”, “Bhualka Puraskar”.

Syed Mustafa Siraj was born at Khoshbaspur village in Murshidabad district in 1930. He started his writing career with short stories and became famous immediately. Some of his memorable short stories are “Inti, pisi o hatbabu”, “Bhalobasa o down train “Hizal Biler Rakhalera’ and “Taranginir Chokh”, ” Uro pakhir Chhaya”, “Manusher Janma”, “Maati”, “Goghna”, and “Mrityur Ghora”. The readers loved his works and his style of story-telling.

His many novels and short stories were translated into all major Indian languages. His novels like “Plabon”, “Neel Gharer Nati”, “Trinabhumi”, “Aleek Manush”, “Colonel Samagra” are continue to be the best-sellers.

It’s a huge loss for the Bengali readers and intellectuals. May god rest his soul in peace!
