(By Sharanya Bhattacharya)
The Rainbow Days is one book which is out of the blue. When everyone writes about everything starting from Chiclets to mythological fiction, this is one topic which is still not much written by usual writers. A wonderful attempt by Prabir Kumar Datta, this book is the story of odds and evens, of life of everything.
Basically through the eyes of Papu, a small kid who is subjected to a village life in his early childhood, he learns to deal with the adversities and supports his family when in need. A wonderful student from the beginning, he is a responsible person too. From his childhood, he had known a lot about life and what it takes to survive.
Discussing with his father and being with him, he has also seen how his father has fought for the well being of the village while the others had started misunderstanding him. No matter what, he always stood beside his family and even raised the position of his village by standing first in the whole district in the Higher Secondary Examination.
The writing of the author has expressed that he has been very much inspired by the great writer RK Narayan making the whole book a very smooth read. The characters, ambience they live in have been so well described that one feels that he/she is there at the place of Papu.
But even after so many positivity’s, there were mistakes in the book too. A few scenes and details of the book were repeated a lot many times. The narrating style wasn’t constant which at times caused the reader disturbance in the flow of the book. Another round of proofreading could’ve been the icing on the cake.
The book was all in all a very enlightening read. It made tears well up in my eyes as I read a few parts and the end left me smiling.
