The 37th Kolkata Book Fair which is scheduled to be held in January 2013 will be dedicated to the memory of Sri Sunil Gangopadhyay, the famous Bengali writer.
Sri Gangopadhya who hails from the village Pub Maijpara (near Madaripur) in what is now Bangladesh, died a few days ago – on 23rd October. He won the Sahitya Akademi Award for his book “Se Somoy” in 1985.
The office of the Book Fair or one of the halls in the Milan Mela ground is also likely to be named after Sri Gangopadhyay. A Memorial Lecture and an award for poets and writers are also going to be instituted in the name of Sri Sunil Gangopadhyay.
Vikram Seth is expected to deliver a “Sunil Gangopadhya Memorial Lecture” during the inaugural ceremony of the 37th Kolkata Book Fair.
Tridib Chatterjee, Secretary of the Publishers and Book Sellers Guild, said: “Since its inception in 1976, Sunil-da was closely associated with the Kolkata Book Fair. He was a regular at the event, participating in the discussions and seminars and offering us valuable advice.”
Sri Gangopadhyay was also actively involved in starting and conducting the Kolkata Literary Meet. The first edition of the Kolkata Literary meet (20110) was inaugurated by him.
The 37th Kolkata International Book Fair will be inaugurated on 29th January 29 2013 and will close on 10th February. The Kolkata Literary Meet will be held from 31st January to 4th February 2013.
