The 26th Hyderabad Book Fair was inaugurated on 15th December 2011 by the Rural Development Minister Sri D. Manikya Vara Prasada Rao and Sri Chukka Ramayya (Member of the A.P.Legislative Council) at People’s Plaza, Necklace Road, Hyderabad.
The Hyderabad Book Fair is the second largest book fair in the country – the Kolkata Book Fair being the largest.
The 26th Hyderabad Book Fair has about 250 stalls. There are about 150 stalls displaying books in English, about 90 stalls for Telugu books, and a handful of stalls displaying books in Hindi, Urdu, and Kannada. Publication Division, National Book Trust, Kendra Sahitya Academy, Telugu Academy, Potti Sriramulu Telugu University, Navodaya Book House, Visalandhra Book House, Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Penguin, Orient Blackswan are among the leading publishers participating in the Hyderabad Book Fair.
Several publishers from Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bombay, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada are represented at the Book Fair. Some 6,000 publishers are estimated to be represented here and about 6,00,000 titles are estimated to be on display.
Children Books, Stories, Novels, Text Books relating various disciplines like Engineering, Medicine, Sciences etc, and other books of fiction as well as non-fiction are on display. The vast range of books is bound to cater to a wide range of readers.
The Hyderabad Book Fair is organised by the Hyderabad Book Fair Society which was founded in 1985 by a number of famous book publishers. The first exhibition which was held at the City Central Library, Ashoknagar, Hyderabad, was a huge success. As a result subsequent editions of the book fair were held at the Nizam College grounds and Kesav Memorial High School grounds. For the last five years, the book fair has been held at People’s Plaza on Necklace Road, Hyderabad.
The Book Fair was originally scheduled to start on 1st December and continue till 11th December; but it was postponed due to “unavoidable reasons”.
The Hyderabad Book Fair is open from 15th December to 25th December between 2 pm and 9 pm during weekdays and between 12 Noon and 9 pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
The entry fee for the Book Fair is Rs.5/-. Students, teachers, writers, and journalists are allowed a free entry on production of proper identity cards; about one lakh free passes have been issued to book lovers, educational institutions, etc.
