Honda Motor has announced that it would recall more than 300,000 cars of as many as 10 models (including Honda Accord and Honda Civic) globally because of a defect which have come to light since their sale.
The cars have a defect in the driver’s airbag. The container containing the gas that expands the airbag in case of an accident is found to be the Achilles Heel of these airbags. The gas container is found to have a tendency to shatter into fragments flying all around while the gas is expanding the airbag.
The airbag unit will be replaced in the recalled cars.
A vast portion of the cars – nearly 300,000 of the 304,035 cars being recalled – were sold in the US and Canada.
Honda Motor said that the current exercise is a continuation of the previous recalls made in 2008 and 2010 involving some 950,000 calls.
It may be recalled that Toyota recalled as many as 9 million (yes, 9 million) cars in 2009-10 because of defective brakes and accelerators.
The numbers are staggering and raise serious concerns about quality. Are Japanese standards slipping?
