India’s leading historian and non-fiction writer Ramachandra Guha is back with his new book, titled ‘Democrats and Dissenters’, focusing on a series of topics “from the varying national projects of India’s neighbours to political debates within India itself, from the responsibilities of writers to the complex relationship between democracy and violence”.
The new collection of essays has been written with “compelling contemporary interest, written with elegance and wit”.
The book critically review the work of Nobel Laureate and economist Amartya Sen and British Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm. Guha’s essay also focuses on the tribals in India who are desperately in need the attention and on the peculiar absence of a tradition of conservative intellectuals in India.
