‘The greatest’ boxer Muhammad Ali aka Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., left for heaven abode on Saturday. He was 74.
It is being learnt that the boxer was admitted to a hospital for serious breathing and respiratory issues. By the time of filing this report, the exact cause of his death was unclear, but primary diagnostics indicated Parkinson’s disorder to have worsened the situation.
Ali was fighting for his life and by early Friday, four of Ali’s seven children were already at his side in the hospital. Doctors talked about shifting him to a different part of the hospital, but it was decided that moving him was far too dangerous and was later placed on life support system.
Over the years, Ali, reportedly suffered from numerous health issues. In 2015, he was hospitalized for a severe urinary tract infection. It was originally diagnosed as pneumonia. In December 2014, he had a mild case of pneumonia that put him in the hospital for a couple of days.
Many famous personalities took to social media to pay respects to the late boxer.
Australian boxer Danny Green took to Facebook to pay homage to the most charismatic boxer the world has ever seen, posting a photo of the two together. “RIP to THE LEGEND,” Green wrote and went ahead to write, “Thanks to this champion, boxers like myself were able to make a living from the sport we love. He was responsible for bringing the great sport of boxing to the masses. He captured the imagination of everyone #sadday.”
US President Barrack Obama posted a heartfelt statement paying tribute to Ali late on Saturday night, saying that both he and first lady Michelle Obama were mourning the legend’s passing.“Muhammad Ali was The Greatest. Period. If you just asked him, he’d tell you. He’d tell you he was the double greatest; that he’d ‘handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder into jail’,” Obama said.
“He inspired me because he was real, ” Mundine told the ABC. “As an athlete and as a fighter he was the best. As a person and the human being he was … he kept it real. Even when he declined to go to war to bomb and kill other poor people, that really resonated (with me).“It’s a very sad loss. He was one of the great men of all time. A great person and activist in his own right,” she added.
He was generally considered the mightiest heavyweight in the history of the sport. Even in the early days of his career he was known for being an inspiring, controversial and polarizing figure, both on and off the boxing ring.
His fans around the globe were devastated on learning about his death. His fans as well took to social media to express grief and offer condolences and prayers.
“Rest in peace, Mohammed Ali. You were truly the greatest in more ways than one,” read one of the tweets.
