Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has reportedly moved to the Supreme Court. His decision comes as a challenge to treat and accept the Aadhaar Bill as a money bill, which was passed during Budget session that took place the previous month.
The passage of the bill had reportedly overruled amendments from the Rajya Sabha.
“Yesterday I have filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the decision to treat Aadhaar as a money bill,” Ramesh said in his statement to the press in New Delhi.
With this, the controversy that refuses to diminish and has escalated ever since seems to have taken a new twist. However, stance is being maintained that the Speaker’s discretion would be final in the matter. The five proposed amendments in the Upper House had been turned down eventually, in the matter. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who had originally moved the bill and put it up in both the Houses, had also turned down opposition claims stating that “Parliament cannot legislate since the matter is before Supreme Court.”
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh had then blatantly portrayed his “anguish”. Calling the passage of the bill in this manner “a very dangerous trend”, Ramesh had later said that the government tried to “bypass” the Rajya Sabha by doing this.
