The island nation of New Zealand currently is in the midst of talks regarding whether there should be a new flag, as a referendum to replace the existing one prevails. The referendum, according to the latest sources, has been put to vote, where the polls close at 19:00 local time (06:00 GMT). A preliminary result is scheduled to be announced soon after the process.
The current design is the British Union Jack, a legacy of New Zealand’s bygone days as an English colony. This is also the cause behind wanting the change. According to the official sources, the proposed new design is named as the Silver Fern, that displays four red stars representing the Southern Cross, along with a silver fern and a little black in the corner. The two motifs are also associated with the nation and also its prominent rugby team.
