‘’Exception proves the rule”- This old adage has not become completely oblivion to the denizens of this modern era. Mani Bhoumik, one who got immense recognition from the success as a co-inventor of the laser technology, once stated that “happiness is an inside job” and henceforth he immersed himself into the integration of mind and matter whereby he could relate science and spirituality.
Poet Amitava Chaudhuri, who is a successful Mechanical Engineer by profession seems to follow the above path whereby he finds his soul satisfaction by writing poems. His latest creation ‘ Bliss Of Dark Solitude’ speaks of different emotive feelings which any person endeavor in his daily life varying from a wide domain of empathy, envy, greed, lament to love and catharsis.
The cover page of the book with the display of a barren tree with name ‘Bliss of Dark Solitude ‘ tries to portray a stoic picture of an old person , lamenting the memoirs of gay and grief which he has undergone in his one and only life. There is a touch of introspection in each and every poem.
Delicate Bond speaks of an unconditional love between two people where relation seems to be too eternal to the hurdles and hardship provided by time. Their true bonding seems unattached of any materialistic obligations, thus making it as pure and pious as possible.
The Old Grudge portrays lamentation of a person who feels disappointed that despite several attempts he could not fulfill every person’s expectations from him, which might have retained an old grudge in those dissatisfied hearts , resulting a inexhaustible burden in his old mind.
The Farmer’s Fate : We desire to live in big apartments relishing sumptuous food , but we never give a single penny of homage to the actual creator of our luxury, the laborers or the peasants whose continuous- tireless –striving aspirations ignoring all the natural calamities actually makes our dream possible. Here the poet speaks of empathy which one should share to sustain the moral values of life.
Wild ambition speaks of hard determination and `never say die attitude’ , which the poet surmises to be one’s psychic ingredients to cook the real success of life bypassing all the natural calamity and emotional cacophony of life , proving that old adage `Where there is will there is a way’.
The Lonely Path : Glory and success can not be accomplished on the path of roses, rather it is often gained at the cost of other’s sacrifice, betrayal and the concerned person’s core determination to reach the goal hook or by crook ; at the cost of other’s happiness. At the end of journey the successful person finds him very solitary as there is no one with whom he can share his happiness. Thus he repents for the every single person he has hoodwinked in his path of success.
Who am I speaks of a confused mind who gets perplexed and frustrated by all the unnecessary tensions provided by capricious time. He doubts his own meaningful existence. The poet has beautifully portrayed a paradoxical metaphor whereby a wave in one sequence is displayed as an impotent matter which loses its mere existence after reaching the shore ; in another sequence it’s mightiness and worthiness is displayed while breaking a rock as inevitable impediment on it’s way. Thus inspiring the readers to see the positive side of every thing and again thereby reiterating an old adage that ` Fortune favors the brave’.
Envy and Greed: These two words often follow one another as matter of consequence in anyone’s life. But the poet has beautifully placed them diagonally opposite to one-another through his poems Envy and Greed.
An Ordinary Man speaks of a person who laments every moment for leading a solitary life bereft of every lively emotion . Thus he repents for surviving an incomplete life.
Awake, My Mind reminds one of Swami Vivekananda saying : `Free yourself from the bondages of life’. Here the poet tries to motivate his beloved readers, asking their soul to arise and awake from the claustrophobia of cowardice and nitty- gritty of covetousness to the threshold of salvation, whereby he could lead a life for a good purpose wearing a shield of boldness with a indomitable spirit, lingering that beautiful adage `A rolling stone gathers no moss.’
Thus Bliss of Solitude is a must read for every poem lover as it tries to decipher the true meaning of one’s life in a round-robin way.
