When I mention the word, Mossad, what comes to mind? Sounds like a Lebanese delicacy? Some exotic place? A historical monument? No, not even close. But, I am not surprised, hardly no one knows about the Mossad. I’ll put you out of your misery now! Mossad is the intelligence agency of Israel. The book belongs to the non-fiction genre and has been divided into twenty different chapter. It starts with the formation of Mossad and goes on to describe their operations in great detail. From assassinations to kidnappings, this book has it all. Even though the book is non-fiction it reminds you of a thriller or one of those classic spy novels that always engross you.
Their ways of planning, the precision is completely awe-worthy. From poisons that kill you as soon as they come in contact with the skin and making bombs from day-to-day appliances, Mossad triumphs in them all. Pretty secretive about their missions, 80% of the people in the world have no idea about Mossad. Mossad was formed on December 13, 1949, as the Central Institute for Coordination at the recommendation of Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion to Reuven Shiloah. Ben Gurion wanted a central body to coordinate and improve cooperation between the existing security services—the army’s intelligence department (AMAN), the Internal Security Service (Shin Bet), and the foreign office’s “political department”. In March 1951, it was reorganized and made a part of the prime minister’s office, reporting directly to the prime minister.
The books starts off a little heavy but once you get into the flow of things, it’s a very easy read. It makes you want to know more about Israel and its stupendous agency.
The best thing about the book, if you ask me, is not the detailed accounts of the various missions, not even the effort undertaken to describe not just the mission not the decision making process behind them and the extensive preparation, but the fact that the book is not a hagiographical account of Mossad. It objectively analyses Mossad’s missions, at times bringing to light the criticism Mossad faced for its handling of the missions.
